I've looked forward to this Memorial Day event for several years. It was my  incentive in writing the book Detroit's Mount Elliott Cemetery published by Arcadia.  I dedicated the book to our great grandfather Piotr Wojtkowiak (1863-1897) who died in Detroit at the age of 37. He left six children behind, wife Marianne giving birth to their seventh child three weeks later. I've used the royalties from the book to purchase the tombstone. It is made of  the required Barre granite, measures 2 ft x 3 ft ,and  is 6 inches thick so it can survive many Michigan winters.

Piotr Wojtkowiak's great grandson Larry (Dino) DiNatale, retired Fire Chief, will take part in the parade. They pass under a large American flag suspended from two fire engine ladders, and through the grounds to the Firemen's section. Wreaths are placed in the Firemen's section, and this year's deceased are announced and tolled in. Taps close the moving ceremony.
